Shovel Right

We were all waiting for it come, some of us anxiously awaiting it's arrival and some of us dreading it. Either way, the snow has arrived. Today as we all have to clean up the mess it left behind, here are a few pointers to consider to help protect your back.

Average snow weighs between 5-7 ponds per shovelful. Now, after last nights snow, we are looking at 10-12 pounds. So, think about the weight that you are throwing around.

1) RIGHT SHOVEL
Choose a light weight shovel that pushes the snow so you don't have to lift as much. This allows you to avoid the lifting and twisting which is what causes most of the shoveling injuries that I see. If you are using a metal shovel, you can spray it with Teflon so the snow doesn't stick to the shovel.

2) KNEES, KNEES, KNEES
Make sure to bend your knees when you do have to lift the shovel. This will utilize your leg and arm muscles and keeps your back straighter.

3) STRETCH FIRST
Shoveling is a strenuous activity, take some time to warm up and stretch before you go outside. This will help prevent a muscle strain while shoveling.

4) TAKE A BREAK
If you get tired, stop and rest. If you are short of breath, also stop. If you start to feel any chest pain stop, if it worsens over time, call 911 immediately. If you notice a pain or sudden "pop" in your back, stop and rest. If the pain persists for more than a day, or remains significant, call the office to schedule an appointment.

I hope these few tips will eliminate shoveling mishaps this winter.

Even the Yankees know how to utilize a great thing

The New York Yankees know a thing or two about winning. The team has dominated baseball generation after generation. Why do you think that is?

Could it, or would it be possible because they have utilized chiropractors since the 1920's? I would like to say YES!!!!

Dr. Painter was associate with the Yankee organization between the 1920's and 1930's. Is it a coincidence that the Yankees had their best years during that period (4 world championships)? It is said that the organization asked to keep their utilization of chiropractic as a secret. They didn't want the other teams to have the advantages that they did.

Johnny Damon believes that chiropractic has helped him as well as his team this yearand throughout his career. He has stayed off of the injured reserve list and has promoted hiring a team chiropractor for the Yankees, just like in the good ole days of Babe Ruth and Dr. Painter.

Chiropractic is great for sports injuries and wellness care. This goes to show that when the premier athletes seek care, you know that there is something to it.

Flu season is here!!!!

The Flu Season is Here, Are You Ready?

Ways to naturally boost your immune system
1)Get adjusted by your Chiropractor regularly
2)Drink lots of water
3)Avoid eating very much sugar
4)Get plenty of sleep
5)Get plenty of exercise
6)Take probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium

Is the flu shot right for you? Can the flu shot make you get sick? Absolutely.

Anytime you put a foreign substance into your body you are disrupting the body’s natural balance. The chemicals in a shot are toxic and therefore decrease your body’s own resistance. Whether you get sick from the virus in the shot, or get sick from the viruses that are around your body at any given time, waiting for a decrease in the body’s immune response, depends on the situation. Either way your body can get sick from the flu vaccine.

Will it prevent you from getting the flu?Your guess is as good as mine. The flu shot is made by guessing the 5-6 strains of the flu virus, that will be the most common that year. The flu vaccine has made it reputation of being effective, by keeping people that would not have gotten the flu anyway, from getting the flu. So with or without the vaccine you might get the flu or you might not. Build you body up naturally and have faith that your body knows what to do.

What is in the flu shot? Sad but true. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWfCnjnShnM

I hope this information is helpful.

Thoughts Traumas Toxins

This weekend I was visiting with two colleagues of mine. During our conversation, all 3 of us had mentioned that we had headaches. Mine was related to my sinuses, my friend's was from caffeine withdrawal and her husbands was from tension. All 3 different sources, but we all had the same idea, let's adjust each other.....................................the result, we all felt better after the chiropractic adjustment.

Why do you think that is?????

IF YOUR SPINE IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT EXTRA STRESS AND STRAIN ARE PUT UPON THE SURROUNDING TISSUES CAUSING PAIN AND DISCOMFORT.

That is my chiropractic philosophy, but in a discussion with my colleagues, they challenged me, what does the position of your spine have to do with caffeine withdrawal???? I instantly said there are other reasons why your spine is can be out of alignment and they are THOUGHTS, TRAUMAS, AND TOXINS. This is the very same principle that Chiropractic was based on, and one that I don't discuss as often as I should.

THOUGHTS How can a thought cause your spine to be out of alignment?? Think of a time that you were under a great amount of stress. How did you feel? Were you tight in your shoulders, so tight in fact that you had to physically separate your shoulders from your ears??? That is muscle tension that is normally increased when we are under stress. With an increase of muscle tension, there is extra spinal stress causing misalignment's of the spine. Chiropractic adjustments coupled with exercises and therapies to address the increase tension will help with the pain and discomfort.

TRAUMAS I think of the 3 principals, this is the most self explanatory. If you have had a trauma, you should be checked to make sure your spine is properly aligned. What most people don't understand with this principle is that we incur micro-traumas every single day that causes the extra stress and strain on the spine and surrounding tissues!!! What am I talking about??? POSTURE, POSTURE, POSTURE........................need i say more?? Poor posture, which 99.9% of us are guilty of, is a micro-trauma causing injuries on a daily basis. Also, something like stubbing your toe and the jolt of your neck during it, can cause a minor injury that over time can result in poor spinal position that may lead to neck pain, headaches, etc..................

TOXINS As for toxins, toxins in your body can result in your body not functioning at 100%. Poor nutrition, dehydration, drugs, and alcohol are examples of toxins that inhibit your body from functioning at 100%, which means you are not performing at 100% no matter what way we look at it. So what can chiropractic do to help??????? A spinal adjustment will allow the nervous system to function better by realigning the spine taking pressure off of the spinal column. I know it seems like a simple answer, but it is a little complicated.

Moral of the story......... no matter what the source of your problem is, you may be helped with a chiropractic adjustment. I hope this sparks some questions for you and if you want them answered, feel free to email me. If you know of anyone that you believe could be helped with chiropractic care, call me and give me their name and number and let me reach out to them.

Signing off for now, but please sayt tun'd

June Testimonial

In recent conversations I've been asked what patients should expect from care. I always tell my patients that each individual has different goals for care and therefore will have different results. I address what is important to the patient in determining their course of treatment. I often find that patients require rebuilding of the spine in order to achieve their individual goals.

Below is a testimonial from a patient that did structural rehab, or spinal rebuilding.

I had severe neck and back pain for years. I tried three different chiropractors only to have the same result of temporary relief and the doctors not knowing what else to do. As it turned out I had a severe reversed curve in my neck that was not responding to traditional chiropractic methods and as a result was referred to Dr Renee Stauffacher who specialized in structural rehab. After reviewing my case she came up with a plan tailored to my needs and started a 36 session series of therapies using several different devices, techniques and exercises that spanned across several weeks. After the first series I noticed a big difference in my pain level and after completing two full series not only did I feel great, but my x-rays showed the proof of change. Hard work, patience and dedication do pay off. I would recommend Dr Renee to everyone who is seeking results.

If you or anyone that you know suffers from pain or migraines, please tell them to contact Eryn to set up a consultation.

How many times have you sat and contemplated on being content or taking the extra step? Depending on your energy level, time constraints, and other factors it's easy to say that's good! Why is it that we don't always push ourselves?
